Lets Dissolve Soap

Problem Scenario

If you are on an island that is flooded with salt water and fresh water you will need to know witch one to put your one bar of soap in so it will last long.

Broad Question

Does the type of water effect the rate at witch soap dissolves?

Specific Question

If I put a bar of soap in a buckett of salt water will it disolve faster that a bar of soap in a bucket of fresh water.

Hypothesis

The bar of soap in the bucket of salt water will dissolve faster than the bar in the fresh water.

Variables

Independent Variable: The type of water that the soap will be placed into.

Dependent Variable:The amount of witch the soap dissolves.


Variables That Need To Be Controlled: the allotted time that the soap will be put in the water and amount of water.

Bar of soap: This is a cleaning implement.
Lye:a strong alkaline liquor rich in potassium carbonate leached from wood ashes and used especially in making soap and for washing.
Bucket: The thing that will hold the water and soap.
Animal Fat: The fat on an animal.






General Plan


I will put the soap in the buckets full of water in my kitchen and watch them. I will take each bar out every 24 hours and measure them.

if the waler is filled with to much slopy soap i can change the water.

Detailed Procedure

1. Go to the store and buy two bars of soap, two buckets and a bag of salt.
2. Fill both of the buckets with water at the same level.
3. put salt in one of the buckets.
3. Next you will unwrap the bars of soap.
4.Measure the bars of soap in center meters.
5.Put one in each of the buckets.
6.Put a video camera next to the buckets and press record.
7. Come back in about five days and remeasure the bars of soap.
8.Record the data and plot it.

Conclusion
I conclude that the bar of soap in the buckett of salt water disolved faster than the bar in the buckett of fresh water.

Discussion

The expiriment went very well. I did not have many problems.But i did have to change the water a couple of times. I had some trouble moving my expirement from my moms house to my dads house.all in all i didnt have to many problems.

Soap is made of lye and animal fat. these two ingredients are heated together and then cooled.
